How to Storyboard an AI-Generated Video Before Spending Credits
Turn a message into a shot list, continuity plan, prompt packet, and review workflow so AI-generated clips edit into one coherent video.

The expensive way to make an AI-generated video is to open a prompt box and search for inspiration one clip at a time. Each result suggests a different idea, style, character, and camera direction. After many generations, there may be several attractive shots but no edit that connects them.
A storyboard reverses the order. It defines what every shot must communicate before credits are spent. The frames do not need to be beautiful. They need to expose missing logic, continuity risks, and assets that should be created once and reused.
This workflow is designed for short marketing, explainer, social, and product videos assembled from generated clips. It does not assume a particular model or editor.
Begin with one sentence of viewer change
Write what the viewer should know, feel, or do after the video:
A small retailer understands that one approved product photo can become several short motion assets and decides to try the workflow.
This is more useful than “make an exciting AI product video.” It gives the sequence a before and after.
Then define:
- audience;
- destination;
- target duration;
- one primary action;
- one claim or idea that must be clear;
- mandatory brand, legal, or accessibility elements.
If the brief contains several unrelated messages, split it into separate videos. Short generated clips do not make an overloaded communication plan coherent.
Write beats before shots
Beats are changes in information. A 20-second product video might use:
- Problem: static product assets feel repetitive.
- Method: choose a clean source image.
- Transformation: add controlled motion.
- Range: adapt the idea to several placements.
- Action: try the workflow.
Only after the beats are stable should you decide whether each beat needs one shot or several. This prevents camera ideas from taking over the message.
Convert each beat into a shot card
Use a repeatable card:

Example:
S03 — 4 seconds
- Beat: controlled motion turns a still into a usable asset.
- Frame: close-up, product in right third.
- Action: condensation moves and one highlight crosses the bottle.
- Camera: slow 10 percent push-in.
- Anchors: same bottle, label, stone surface, and cool window light as S02.
- Audio: quiet room tone and soft glass contact.
- Acceptance: label shape stable, no extra product, clean left space.
The acceptance check is crucial. It turns “looks good” into reviewable criteria.
Draw ugly frames early
A storyboard sketch can be boxes, arrows, and labels. Use it to answer:
- Where is the subject?
- Which direction is it facing or moving?
- Where is negative space?
- What enters or exits?
- What is the first frame?
- What is the last frame?
- Will the next shot cut smoothly?
Do not spend time polishing a storyboard image before the shot logic is approved. A rough frame makes changes cheap.
If a generated still will become an image-to-video source, create it after the rough board. Follow the image-to-video source-frame checklist so the frame contains the body parts, object edges, and movement space the shot needs.
Establish a continuity bible
Video models generate shots independently unless a workflow supplies references. Write down the anchors that must persist.
Character
- face and age range;
- hair shape and color;
- clothing layers;
- accessories;
- relative height and build;
- allowed emotional range.
Product
- geometry;
- packaging version;
- color;
- logo placement;
- functional components;
- scale relative to hands or environment.
Location
- layout;
- time of day;
- light direction and color;
- recurring props;
- weather;
- background population.
Cinematography
- aspect ratio;
- contrast and saturation;
- camera height;
- lens character;
- movement style;
- grain or texture.
Keep a small set of approved reference images rather than a folder of inconsistent alternatives. Label them by shot and purpose.
Preserve screen direction
If a subject moves left to right in one shot, cutting to the same subject moving right to left can suggest reversal. If two people look at each other, their eyelines and frame sides should remain coherent.
Mark arrows on the storyboard for subject travel, gaze, camera move, and key-light direction. This does not mean every shot must use the same angle. It means angle changes should preserve understandable space. When the sequence intentionally crosses direction, include a neutral or transitional shot.
AI video prompts should state direction explicitly:
The courier walks from left to right. Side tracking shot at matching speed.
The camera movement guide provides clearer terms for pans, tracking, dollies, orbits, and cranes.
Plan aspect ratio before blocking
A storyboard is drawn inside the delivery frame. A wide shot list cannot simply be squeezed into vertical.
For 16:9, side-by-side interaction and lateral movement are natural. For 9:16, use depth, stacked subjects, and tighter singles. For square, keep action compact.
Use the aspect-ratio planning guide before source images are approved. If the campaign needs several ratios, draw variant frames now. Reframing later may work for a few static shots, but it should not be the production assumption.
Build a prompt packet, not isolated prompts
Every shot prompt should include its unique action plus shared anchors from the continuity bible.
Shared block:
Soft overcast morning, restrained neutral color, natural documentary texture, same navy jacket and canvas messenger bag.
Shot block:
Medium rear three-quarter view. The courier walks from left to right toward the shop entrance. Smooth side tracking at matching pace.
Avoid copying a huge paragraph into every prompt. Long shared text can compete with the shot’s actual movement. Use only anchors that are visible and important in that frame.
Version prompts:
- S03-v1: locked camera;
- S03-v2: slow push-in;
- S03-v3: reduced mist, label constraint added.
Record model, scene mode, duration, aspect ratio, source asset, and selected output. Reproducibility is part of editing, especially when a replacement shot is needed later.
Generate in edit order
It is tempting to generate the hero shot first. A better order is:
- continuity-establishing source frames;
- the first few adjacent shots;
- a rough edit;
- the remaining sequence;
- expensive or technically difficult hero variations;
- pickups after the first complete cut.
Testing adjacent shots early reveals whether character, product, lighting, and screen direction survive a cut. It is cheaper to repair the visual system after three shots than after thirty.
Do not generate every planned variation before editing. The cut may show that a shot needs only two seconds, that a transition is unnecessary, or that existing footage already delivers the beat.
Use handles and cut points
Generate or retain a little usable time before and after the intended action when possible. Editors need handles for pacing and transitions.
Plan a clear cut point:
- hand reaches the object;
- door closes;
- gaze shifts;
- camera finishes a move;
- product reaches a stable angle;
- sound effect creates a natural boundary.
Avoid ending every clip mid-motion unless the next shot continues that exact movement. A stable first or last frame also makes it easier to use a dissolve, freeze, or graphic transition.
Separate generated and deterministic layers
The storyboard should mark which elements are generated and which are added later.
Generated
- subjects and environments;
- physical motion;
- camera movement;
- atmosphere;
- non-critical sound when supported.
Deterministic
- logos;
- prices;
- claims;
- legal disclaimers;
- captions;
- interface recordings;
- charts;
- final music edit;
- accessibility text.
This keeps exact information out of a probabilistic layer. It also allows copy changes without regenerating an approved shot.
Review against the card
For every candidate, check:
- Does it communicate the beat without explanation?
- Are continuity anchors intact?
- Does action travel in the planned direction?
- Does the camera end where the next cut expects?
- Are faces, hands, products, and text stable frame by frame?
- Is there room for deterministic overlays?
- Does the clip provide enough clean duration?
- Are rights and claims reviewable?
Reject a beautiful shot that does the wrong job. A storyboard protects the edit from attractive detours.
Track a simple generation budget
Estimate:
planned shots × initial variations × expected retry factor × per-generation cost
For eight shots, three first-pass variations, and a 1.5 retry factor, plan for roughly 36 generations—not eight. This is arithmetic for planning, not a claimed benchmark. Reserve a separate pickup budget.
Use cheaper or faster models for composition tests when appropriate, but verify that the final model interprets the same reference and movement. Model substitution is not always seamless.

- prompt versions and output IDs will be recorded;
